Supervision and Ethics with Cory Newman, Ph.D., ABPP

This workshop is designed to help participants:

  • Practice as a positive professional role-model for supervisees
  • Inculcate good ethical practices in supervisees
  • List and fulfill obligations to oversee the clinical care of supervisees' patients
  • Maintain good "housekeeping" practices
  • Serve as a "gatekeeper" for the field
  • Develop organizational practices to keep track of patients' outcomes and further disposition
  • Collaborate effectively with supervisees in managing high-risk clinical circumstances and dilemmas where ethical decision-making is difficult and most critical.

"Supervision and Ethics" is geared toward mental healthcare professionals across disciplines who are responsible for clinical work conducted by therapy trainees. Coming from a cognitive behavioral perspective, but speaking in ways that are relevant across theoretical orientations, Dr. Newman will discuss the core elements of competent, ethical supervision in mental health practice. Several important topics will be covered, including being a role-model for ethical behavior, helping supervisees learn and master ethical principles (including "positive ethics"), fulfilling all-important obligations regarding clinical record-keeping, evaluating supervisees, and helping supervisees manage clinical crises and ethical dilemmas in practice. A video clip will be shown that illustrates Dr. Newman working collaboratively with a supervisee in managing an ethical decision.
